Dear Reader: Stories Told Through Letters & Diaries.The history presented is such a sinister wild ride that the material doesn’t require any further commentary either, as I have found myself saying “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?” on multiple occasions as I read it.Asian American and Pacific Islander Voices I want the data and facts and she writes in a gorgeous way that presents just that. She does a brilliant job of presenting the information without inserting her opinion or turning the book into an outright trash fest. I think a lot of the power structures presented in the book still hold influce in the States today. And learning more intently the horrific history and data behind alot of the evangelical power players I was raised with in the US church and just how they have impacted US politics is insane. Surprisingly, I think it is helping me better understand my dad. I am about 3/4 of the way through this book right now and it is blowing my mind. Wonderfully insightful review! I appreciate your insight coming from outside of the States. America isn't the be all to end all? I feel like they probably need to get out more.) (Also, quick question, did these guys realise that. If you want to understand fundamentalism, I believe this will help.
It goes by facts and the facts are chilling.
My gosh! Did the evangelicals actually read the Bible - like, the whole of it? Or did they just get their teachings from cute quotes on cups? Or just chose the verse they wanted for their narrative and discard the rest? How on earth did they decide it was okay to vote for Trump? How. This is insane.)Īnd in this male-centric, woman-shut up and submit culture - just how much and how many abuse scandals were covered up and hidden. My word does it include fundamentalists.) How politics and patriotism became interwoven, how the Bible was cherry picked from (how can the macho, man-first gospel they taught be ever reconciled with the Bible? The whole Bible?) and how - and this is what really gets me - much power this demographic held? (Still holds? I dunno. (And that definitely includes fundamentalists. It's not a book that is lambasting Christianity - this isn't really a book about religion at all, rather it is the doings of a religious demographic - White Evangelicals. I've just finished the last chapter of Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted A Faith and Fractured A Nation (Kristin Kobes Du Mez) and my gosh, it's fascinating.
